A Laban History: 140 years and the Implications for the 21st Century

Course Description: 

These three classes will address the past, present, and future of the Laban Movement Analysis work.  In the first session, Bradley will present the evidence for and against the concerns about Laban’s personal history and writings.  2-3 CMAs will interrogate the evidence and we will discuss what we know, how we know it, and why it matters.  The second class will address the recent (20 years) history of LIMS itself, its expansions, contractions, and shifts.  And the third class will address some of the cutting edge research utilizing the LBMS material, including applications to technology, medicine, therapy, social justice, cross-cultural practices with special guests.

Instructor’s Short Bio:

Karen Bradley is President of LIMS and Emerita Associate Professor of Dance, University of Maryland. She is the author of Rudolf Laban, a volume in Routledge’s series on 20th Century performance practitioners, and has taught and lectured internationally on LBMS, dance therapy, and neuroscience. Bradley is also a dance/movement therapist, working with children and seniors. She is part of the Steering Committee for the Global Water Dances project and works with LIMS and the Association for Cultural Equity on the Reimagining Choreometrics project. Bradley lives and works from Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia.
