While processing Irmgard Bartenieff’s Papers at Special Collections in Performing Arts we discovered several of IB’s notebooks, one of which contained four dance scores from 1927-28. Working with researchers and creative artists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, two CMAs/choreographers, and a professor of German at the University of Maryland, the Schrifttanz team re-created a stage production of one of the dances: Chinese Ballad. With a grant from the University of Maryland Library, the team used primary source materials from the archives to explore Bartenieff’s use of early notation, changing German script styles, and Laban’s text Choregraphie.
